New Moon of Embodied Receptivity in Gemini with Eyelash Pixie Cup and Stemonitis Slime Mold

Welcome to the New Moon of Embodied Receptivity in 12° 33' Gemini, Earth's 11th New Moon of our lunar year on Saturday, June 3, 2019 (3:01 PST). The frequencies of this New Moon blow over our bodies in the cool gentleness of a springtime breeze. We are refreshed and awakened, we remember and recite. We are re-evaluating how we communicate to others and to ourselves. The way we receive and are receptive to experiences is fresh and bright, like a luminous egg. How do we listen with our bodies? How do we listen through our bodies?

This New Moon brings rich astrological energies of Gemini and Cancer, and planetary influences of Jupiter, Neptune, Mars, and Saturn.

Embodied Receptivity relies on living in a heart-centered spaciousness. How are you reorienting to your methods of communication and how you receive both information and love?

The heart teaches us to let go and let love. These two fungi also tell a similar story - to live from the heart. The Eyelash Pixie Cup tells us to be receptive to our own hearts with our little eyelashes, see the many sides and full perspective of the complete circle, and to reflect upwards and outwards. Slime mold Stemonitis fusca teaches us to not overthink the mumbo-jumbo and to connect the head and the heart as one. Both of these fungi are little, delicate babes that can easily be overlooked on a forest walk. Gemini represents engaging with what is directly in front of you and grows by learning that true connection comes from love. Gemini's love to communicate will come most sustainably and genuinely through feeling out our emotional landscapes.

Hello Gemini season (May 21 - June 20), the last of the 3 signs of spring. A mutable sign, Gemini projects us right into the time of year with the fullest and longest light, or the Summer Solstice (June 21) as we know it in the Northern Hemisphere, or into the darkest night and the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. Curious and childlike Gemini leads us into the culmination of light. When the Sun moves into a zodiac sign it brings awareness to the specific sign's qualities.

This New Moon completes the Taurus New Moon cycle and opens us into a Gemini New Moon cycle for the next 29.5 days, fruiting into a full Moon in 25°53' Sagittarius on June 17. Gemini is a sign of duality and holding the complexity of multiple points of view. Gemini is a shapeshifter, a wanderer, an inquisitor, an observer, a translator, and a jokester. Inclinations to overthink and rationalize emotions are abound. The great teaching of Gemini is to remember how to connect your head to your heart and move in that stability.

This New Moon affects people most significantly with personal planets and energetic concentrations in the middle degrees (11°-18°) of the mutable signs of Gemini, Sagittarius, Virgo, and Pisces.

In your own natal chart, the placement of Gemini is in a house (1-12) that tells you where you might feel these Gemini influences. Each house has its own symbology. For instance, for a Solar Sagittarius (Sagittarius Sun Sign, opposite of Gemini), Gemini is in the 7th house of partnerships, co-creating, and important commitments or contracts with others. If the current moon phase is in the opposite of your natal sign (whether you're looking at your Rising, Sun, or Moon), it's generally bringing energy to the way you relate with others. If we're relating your moon sign then we're talking about emotions. If it's your rising then it's how you may interact with or engage with others. If it's your sun sign then we're talking about your essence and spirit.

New Moon Aspects

Moon is opposite Jupiter (180
°), bringing awareness and tension (though not necessarily discordant) to emotions and growth. Spiritual doubts may arise in the coming weeks.

Moon is square Neptune (90
°), bringing content to surface between emotions and spirit. There will be a hunger for emotional inspiration and a sensitive emotional climate during the next 29.5 days. Don't feel the need to define or understand emotional worlds -- rather, express gratitude, invite them in, and explore their depths. Gratitude is the key and our hearts are the portals.

Moon is semi-sextile (30°) Mars which gives this Moon phase courage and the capability of being focused in a challenge.

Moon is bi-quintile Saturn (144
°). This aspect is made by segmenting the circle of the chart into 5 slices of pizza-pie. Bi-quintile means the Moon and Saturn are aspecting at 144° or 2 slices of pie. Our emotions are receiving energy from this angle, this certain resonance and light language with Saturn. For creativity, emotions, and possibly new methods to develop, we will seek periods of solitude and reflection. It is a good time to immerse yourself in the work and teachings of masters.

Planetary Transits For This Moon Phase

Mercury, planet of communication and mental space, is currently in its home zodiac sign of communicative and airy Gemini and enters Cancer on June 4. This shift will see movement of the mind, style of communication, and the stories we tell ourselves, into an emotional landscape. Mercury in Cancer communicates with feeling and reflection. This time allows us to trust that words are not as important behind them, and to listen to the vibrations of the feelings behind the words. Don't take words too personally and allow for gentle, honest, and intuitive communication that uses more than words alone. Definitely a time of expressing ourselves in creative ways and resonating with art forms and the natural world.
If your Mercury is in Cancer consider this an intense download, re-orientation, and rehabilitation of your mental and communicative space. Enjoy Mercury's transit through Cancer until it enters spirited Leo on June 27.

Venus, planet of love, enters Gemini on June 8th. Gemini in love seeks plenty of communication, reciprocation, and the exchange of mental information between partners and relations. While Gemini thrives in the mind, Gemini and Venus together give us a communicative and curious spin on interactions and relationships. Gemini is both communication and reception to the ideas being offered. Gemini is also the beings and energies in your immediate surroundings, like people who are unavoidable, think neighbors, siblings, or people in your daily commute. This Moon phase holds lots of potential with interactions in your immediate environment -- lots of love is resonating in those nearby frequencies to tune into. Consider your body and what it attracts to be extra electric, like a magnet. Ride the Venus in Gemini airstream current until it transits into water-mama Cancer on July 4th.

The Eyelash Pixie Cup (Scutellinia scutellata) (duskywondersite.com).
The Eyelash Pixie Cup can hold many and different sides of stories and can see multiplicities and pluralities just like Gemini. It's concave cap can retain all sides of a circle, reflect outward, and can even feel around what is moving inside of itself with its little black eyelashes. They are typically found growing on clusters on wet or rotting wood. It's scientific name, S. scutellata means "little dish".

This fungus is in the Ascomycetes phylum (as opposed to Basidiomycota), otherwise known as the "sac" fungi because the defining feature of this fungus is the "ascus" (Greek) meaning "sac" or "wineskin" in which sexual spores are formed. However, there are some Ascomycota that are asexual. Examples of Ascomycota include morels, truffles, dead man's fingers, and other cup fungi.

Hosting 75% of all described fungal species, Ascomycetes include almost all the fungi that form lichens, endophytic symbiosis, or ericoid mycorrhiza, as well as fungi that humans have been applying medicinally (Penicillium) and in food production with beer, bread, and industrial enzymes, and some yeasts. Most ascomycetes are pathogens, and include the notorious Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. Many Ascomycetes form mycorrhizal relationships to plants while a small number are plant-pathogenic fungi like ergot, black knot, apple scab, and powdery mildews.

Most guidebooks site Eyelash Pixie Cup as inedible, but that's probably because they lack any rich source of density or nourishment. The eyelashes of this fungus also resemble the little teeth of some carnivorous plants, suggesting the idea of a stomach as well as an eye.

2) Stemonitis fusca slime mold: length, community, pineal gland, flexibility, growth, overthinking, control, frustration, acceptance

Stemonitis fusca slime mold forming in clusters.
Slime molds were considered at one point to be in the Fungi Queendom, but are now understood as belonging in the Chromista Queendom under the Oomycota phylum. Oomycota are slime and water molds that are actually more closely related to diatoms and brown algae than fungi. While fungi are made up of threadlike filaments of eukaryotic cells (mycelium or hyphae), slime molds are comprised of an acellular mass of protoplasm with no cell wall in its vegetative state.

Slime molds are confusing... and they are essentially fungal-like organisms. With somewhere between 800-1,000 recognized species, the term slime mold embraces an assemblage of organisms that reflect the historical confusion between resemblances and actual relationships between species. The head and its mental activity can only get so far.

The life cycle of slime molds in the Myxometes sub-phyla, that are considered true slime molds, which is what the Stemonitis fusca belong to, are characterized by a plasmodial stage and have definite fruiting bodies. The life cycle is akin to a mold's, where a spore, in the presence of water, releases a small mass of cytoplasm (or swarm cell). It is propelled by a flagella until it comes into contact with the surface and puts forth lobes of cellular material in which resembles an amoeba in this phase, known as a myxamoeba. The fusion of the two cells (swarm cell + myxamoeba) = sexual reproduction and somewhere along the way we get to the plasmodium stage that through repeatedly dividing nuclei form a layer of slime. Whew!

This slime mold reminds us that the mental and sorting activity of the brain can only get so far before it starts to... hurt! This beautiful fungus offers its tiny, peculiar, delicate bodies in wonder and sometimes the people who study it need to simply take a step out of their minds and receive the organism for what it presents in the present moment. A fixating, sporulating, fruiting body that seems to bend and sway in the wind.

The shape of Stemonitis fusca is split into 2 parts, its upper thick body is called the sporangia (spore vessel) which is supported on a slender stalk that can be around 5-20 mm tall. Their tall lankiness conjures the stretching upwards of our energetic bodies that can happen when we expand our hearts. After engaging in healing work that opens up hearts, muscles, cells, blood, or neurons, our energetic bodies also receive a lengthening upward and outward.

Through Stemonitis fusca, we learn that some questions are unanswerable. We learn to live more through the heart. The heart is the central powerhouse of the human energy system. Energy connections of the heart to the physical body are the circulatory system, ribs, breasts, thymus gland, lungs, shoulders, arms, hands, and diaphragm. Gemini rules the hands, arms, shoulders, and lungs, so Gemini is highly related to the heart center, even though it is an air zodiac sign, which is associated with mental activity. The parts of the body that Gemini rules show us to show more attention and love toward these areas -- more flow to the lungs by breathing deeply and inhabiting your body. More flow of the hands, arms, and shoulders comes directly from the heart center.

Gemini is also the zodiac sign of two young twins, which uncovers another of its relevant teachings: as children, we react to our circumstances with a wide range of emotions! Despair, envy, fear, love, passion, hope, excitement... How can we, as adults, allow ourselves to embody a full range of emotional climate from which we act consciously and with compassion?

Both of this New Moon's fungi form in clusters, which shows us that when we become embodied in ourselves we are always strengthening the community ecology of a whole system.
