New Moon of Porous Purpose in Pisces with Pilobolus and Amethyst Coral

Welcome to the 8th New Moon of our lunar year, the New Moon of Porous Purpose at 15°47' Pisces. This New Moon cycle begins on March 6, 2019 at 8:04 (PST). We are reminded of the vast new ground we have the opportunity to embrace, to slow and tune into our surroundings, and to visualize and sustain our soul's highest purpose. The New Moon is the new seed of a lunar cycle and the chart of the new moon is significant to the influences in the coming lunar month. During a New Moon, the light of the Sun fills the Moon as they are conjunct in the sky. The Sun infuses power and energy into the moon in preparation for another 29.5 day journey.

The Aquarian New Moon cycle of Humble Clarity has ended and a new Piscean cycle begins. The cold and barren empty cup we gazed into during the last Full Moon of Surrendering Renewal reminds us now of what is around us. We become more present than ever to our receptivity and the depth, width, and dimensionality of what we can embrace. How can we observe what is there in the foundations of our life and tune into the simpleness? Continuing into our transition, we have a new sense of grounding and even a new perspective of the spacial awareness or extent of ground that we have become receptive to. How can you let this receptivity become present in your daily life? What gives you sustenance? This is a potent time to plan and dream of your highest self -- visualize your soul's true purpose and begin setting the ground to allow this great rawness to infuse your smile, your laugh, and the air you breathe in.

You are enough. This is a time to live in the space of questioning and imagining.

During this cycle, we can embrace the ways that our bodies can feel liquid. Porous Pisces is alive and swimming well and Neptune (Pisces' ruler) is infusing a lot of its psychic and emotional energy into many planetary bodies. The Sun, Mercury, Neptune, asteroid Vesta, and Moon (which is also tightly aligned with Neptune within a degree), are all transiting in Pisces. Pisces is the deep vast sea where the current can bring us in many directions. Follow your senses, observe your body closely and creatively, and feel what you want to invite in. What fills up your loving cup? What do you want to deeply connect with? How do you want to be intimate in and with life? To prioritize purpose is to truly allow yourself to feel the love in your heart and to know what you need to let it grow.

Visualize your purpose not only with your eyes, but also your ears, taste buds, spine, skin, blood, and your cellular membranes. How can your cells swim fluidly like the many currents of the Pisces sea?

On March 5th, Mercury stations retrograde at a critical degree, having transitioned all the way into the last degree of Pisces, it has not ventured into Aries and has instead began to retrace it's steps back into the imaginative, compassionate, and subtle seas of Pisces. Mercury describes our communication skills and how we relate to our external worlds. The term retrograde is traced back to latin as "backward-step".

During Mercury retrograde periods, we might reconsider projects and ideas from the past 3-4 months and plan, examine, research, and resource. People with dominant Mercuries can be much more affected by retrograde periods. In a time of retrograde, the planetary body appears to move backwards from the perspective of earth, backtracking the path it had just transited. As Mercury is such a fast moving planet, it is a powerful time to let your experiences be led by breath and the release of control. Slow down and breathe in what sustains your growth.

Mercury's synodic period (in between every retrograde) is 116 days (3.8 months) and has a retrogradation period of about 21 days. The last two Mercury retrogrades of 2019 are July 7th - August 1st and November 1st - November 21st.

Venus has been in Aquarius since March 1st and transits into Pisces on March 26th. Aquarius is very faithful, but definitely on its own terms.

March 6th marks Uranus' grand entrance into Taurus, which it will transit for the next 7 years (until July 2, 2025). This is a huge shift of energy -- Uranus, the planet of revolution and rebellion moves into fixed earth Taurus. The planet is departing on a revolution in earth energy. Uranus will shake things up to how we enjoy our lives and where our resources lay. Our dependence on the industrial era is shifting, there are many new economic opportunities waiting to find their expression in the next few years. We have a very inventive and unpredictable way of reconnecting to earth's wisdom. The earth is going to be asking deeper questions through us.

Uranus is considered a higher vibration of Mercury just as Neptune is the higher vibration of Venus. Both Mercury and Uranus correspond with nervous and mental impacts, but Uranus is a much more volatile, powerful, and unexpected force, often harder for the physical body to handle. Uranus brings disruption, revolution, individualism, freedom, anarchy, rebellion, altruism, originality, invention, experimentation, instability, erratic action and detachment.

And, of course, we have entered the wave of Wounded Healer Chiron in Aries (since February 18th, read more in previous Full Moon of Surrendering Renewal post). Chiron is an asteroid with an orbit that bridges Uranus and Saturn -- playing in between the expanding, revolutionary intelligence of the new and the contracting ways that work here on earth. For the next 7 years, Chiron's transit in Aries has immense potential to go into the psychological function of our suffering. We can really go into how we're caught between our animal and human instinct and take a stand in the choices we make.

Pilobolus
Growing on dung (coprophilic), the Pilobolus repels itself at great speed, strength, and accuracy. This fungus has a very curious way of ensuring the continuation of future generations and the surging of ever-changing life. A boisterous yet graceful propelling of Uranian surprise shoots us up into the air, reaching far away ground with incredible accuracy. Being immobile, spores are at the mercy of the conditions around them, Spores must land in supportive environments to continue their life cycles -- and sometimes, since we are in fact humans, a little shift in perspective can thoroughly enhance our surroundings.

The fungi in the genus Pilobolus have the largest spore dispersal range, channeling 20,000 Gs to land an impressive 2 meters away from the parent mushroom. This fungus has a way of finding the sun, just as a flower does, to shoot its spores into the far off distance. Pilobolus reminds us of the depth of our own spore dispersal range and our receptivity to our environment. You are not alone! Be present to your surroundings and they will be present to you.

Here is a clip of the Pilobolus maturing and shooting their spores into the atmosphere!

The genus Pilobolus was first classified in 1784, three years after innovative Uranus was discovered in 1781. The life cycle of a Pilobolus first begins as a black sporangium that has been discharged as excrement from herbivorous animals (horses, cows, pigs) onto a plant substrate. This genus survives the gritty passage through the intestinal tract without germinating and emerges with the animal's grand release -- it's poop!

Ew dung? Well, for a fungal spore, that happens to be a very nurturing place to be since it is warm and full of nutrients. The spores then myceliate here and grow to become mature, eventually manufacturing what some call a "spore cannon".

Progressing the narrative of the Virgin Virgo (divinely and sensually whole in and of itself) from last full moon, this genus has an asexual life cycle and an asexual fruiting structure called a sporangiophore. It's spores do not need to germinate sexually to continue their evolution. The sporangiophore has a unique fruiting mechanism where a transparent stalk rises above the animal's poop and forms a balloon-like vesicle which a single, black sporangium develops out of. The sporangium is an enclosure where the spores of the fungus form. All plants and fungi form sporangia at some point in their life. In some phyla of fungi, the sporangium play a role in the asexual reproduction and may also play an indirect role in sexual reproduction. During asexual reproduction, these spores will be dispersed by the wind and germinate into haploid hyphae.

When pressure builds within the vesicle and reaches a sufficient level, the sporangium is launched into the air, traveling anywhere from a couple of centimeters up to 6 feet away. While these sporangiophores are less than 1 cm tall, their acceleration is anywhere from 0 to 20 km/hr, creating over 20,000 Gs in the process! This is akin to a human being launched into space at 100 times the speed of sound.

As an adaptation strategy, these spores are released the farthest out of any other fungi. Our release in the last moon may have been the deepest and farthest we have felt. But, we have traveled more ground than before and have a new understanding of what it means to sustain our growth.

The sporangiophores, or asexual fruiting structures, have an extraordinary ability of orienting themselves to point directly toward a light source. If the stalks point toward the early morning sun, it is guaranteed that the sporangium will be ejected a far enough distance away from the excrement, which enhances the chances that the sporangium will attach to vegetation and be eaten by a new host, thus completing their life cycles. Herbivores will not graze near their own dung, so the spores must be propelled beyond the "zone of repugnance". Towards the light source will be a better chance of finding an open place with room to ground, grow, and continue new life.

These sporangiophores bravely leave their safe and warm homes in the dung, eject up into the sunlight, in the hopes of what? Landing in an open, lush, grassy spot where it can be picked up by the mouth of another animal, chewed on, digested, and pooped out all over again. This sporangiophore sees that for its species to evolve, it must have courage and trust in leaving its warm patch of dung. Remember the value that others can offer to us. To open up to what's around us requires slowness and observation.

2) Amethyst Coral (Clavulina amethystina): creativity, intuition, play, imagination, subtleness

MycoAstrological Correspondences: Planet: Moon; Secondary Planet: Neptune; Day: Monday; Main Organ: Brain; 2nd Organ: Stomach; System: Nervous; Tissue: Marrow; Action: Cold/Moist

Amethys Coral (Clavulina amethystina)
The Amethyst Coral thrives and dances in the mossy rich seabeds of Pisces. Amethyst Coral reminds us of our creativity and the importance of some good play! Connect with your intuitive worlds and let the sun illuminate your dreams and imagination. This is surely a time to wax poetic as well as simply being with your body and letting its liquid form take place.

Part of Pisces' gift is that it is boundless. It knows and desires transcendent sensation. Pisces sustains through identifying. What are your identities? The Amethyst Coral has many forked heads reaching to the sky -- we can definitely wear many hats but it all surges from the same ground.

Amethyst Coral (Clavulina amethystina)
In a time of New Moon, we regroup and set our intentions. Be in that space of answering how we maintain and nourish our best self. How do we sustain what we need to grow? However unique our evolutions are, we are still connected at the deepest level and are all impressionable to our surroundings.
