Gemini Full Moon of Expanded Journeying with Amadou, Matsutake, and Split Gill

Welcome to the 5th Full Moon of 2018, The Moon of Expanded Journeying. This moon is in the first inhalation of Gemini at 0° 52' and occurs on the night of the 22nd in the Pacific Northwest (21:39) or morning of the 23rd in other places.

During this 5th Full Moon of lighthearted storytelling, Jupiter's lucky expansion ignites our internal flame, moving us with dynamic shapeshifting as we are propelled with the arrow of Sagittarius and the youthful expression of Gemini. The hot arrow slices through the air and clears past, present, and future blockages of energy fields. Be light in your heart. Move with the strength of lightness, be the flame of grace. Allow yourself to be whisked and meet the moment with laughs and learning.

Moon 5 is a bold arrow of travel and journey in itself; it is the number of mercury, who rules Gemini, exalting the luck of swift air. Five symbolizes a grand meeting between yin and yang, the fusion of physical matter -- to bring the phenomenal world into being. The feminine 2 is even in frequency and the masculine 3 is odd in frequency (2+3=5.) Thursday (22nd) is also Sagittarius' day. The next day, the first day flowing into Moon 5 cycle, is the 23rd (2+3=5).

The sun is just entering Sagittarius (22nd), the 9th sign of the zodiac. Sagittarius is the centaur-archer -- the only astrological sign to have both a human and animal representation. Sagittarius is the enthusiasm of fire, the restless mutable quality, one who cannot be confined. The great hunter Sagittarius seeks with ambition, directness, and a strong energy. The point of the arrow is not to get to the arrow, the point, however, is the journeying. Aspiring for consistency or demanding your sense of direction will lose the arrow. Seek a direction, follow the arrow, and spin the arrow again once you may or may not arrive at it.

Mars is in the 12th house of Pisces, and is square with the Sun and Moon. Fiery, responsive Mars is basking in the spiritual, sensitive sea of Pisces, not fully expressing itself. Mars' usual charge may be muddled down and become internalized into the emotional waters and tissues of your body. If this new expression is allowed to come in for a visit, the expansive influence of Sagittarius and Jupiter may highlight the importance of your self care and daily rituals. Balance instincts with compassion, for others and for yourself. If we allow it, this can be a great time of connection with others, as long as we don't feel pressure to come in with aggression and allow time for yourself to decompress physically, emotionally, spiritually.

The sun in Sagittarius will also be in conjunct with Jupiter, its planetary ruler. Our days are inoculated with the last warm breeze of this season. Prosperity sails if we seek our arrow's path rather than control it. Jupiter, the Greater Fortune, rules over higher truth, breadth of vision, and honesty. Expansiveness, abundant possibilities are around every bend with Jupiter in its home. This time is fun, interesting, talkative, and expansive around learning. What is the change of your choosing?

Moon 5 is the last full moon of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, and the next full moon is adjacent to the winter solstice. Here in the U.S., even if we put aside the dated, racist, and colonized narrative of "Thanksgiving", this moon's energy still emphasizes the essence of the naturally seasonal themes of thankfulness, harvest, and abundance. We can always celebrate "Earth's Giving". If we drop the harmful stories of the past, we can turn toward our new directions of higher truth. If we are attuned with our natural ways, our harmonic resonance with the way we sew, sprout, fruit, bear, receive, wither, cleanse, and ferment, we are reminded of our shapeshifting ability to commune with honest source. The end of autumn marks the shifting of seasons and the ways the trees, skies, ground, waters, and air can take different forms.

While Moon 5 is a symbol of the human microcosm, Gemini, the 3rd sign of the zodiac, is the first to have a human rather than animal symbol. Gemini, ruled by speedy mercury, is the winded storyteller -- a conception of intellectuality that has not arose from facts, but from feelings (following the 2nd sign of zodiac, Taurus or form). The story unfolds, people listen, and we remember Truth in ways that we never would have otherwise. The storyteller shows us the versatility of our very own shapeshifting. With Jupiter offering such expansion and movement, Gemini energy can be supportive as long as it doesn't become too manipulative or controlling toward roles, characters, or the story plot. Go into this time with no expectations. Do not control the direction of the arrows.

We are continuing our theme of duality from the New Moon Scorpio to this Full Moon Gemini because Gemini and Sagittarius are polarities of each other. We learned how to be grateful for our transformative death in the last new moon, now can we be graceful and shapeshift in the moment with our lighthearted power? The time is now to let our internal flame move us into the change of our choosing while laughing and sharing joy together. This is a time to learn together. To read, track meanings, and to feel that the meaning is alive, and that we cannot pin it down. We embody the rhythms that are continuous with life.

1) Amadou or Tinder Conk (Fomes fomentarius): Anger, fear, heart, judgment, masculinity, reception

Basket of Amadou (Fomes fomentarius, the grey hoof-shaped polypores) and other woody species. (Dolly Smith 2018)
"Of course you are here!" I exclaimed upon this mushroom's emergence. Amadou appeared to remind us of the ever-flowing nature of our journeying, the wisdom of bearing tinder, and the evolution of our connected consciousness.

"Fomes" means to heat up or burn and the common name Amadou is derived from a northern French dialect meaning "amorous" or "inflames life". In 1991, Ötzi the Tyrolean iceman's 5,000-year-old-remains were found carrying two mushrooms Piptoporus betulinus and Fomes fomentarius as speculated for tinder and medicine (among other tools like a quiver of 14 arrows, an unfinished yew longbow, and copper axe). Birch polypores have traditionally been used to sharpen the edges of weapons and tools, like the bold arrow of Sagittarius. The blade of Ötzi's axe was made of soft and malleable copper -- the metal of the morning/evening star. One of the oldest and widely used metals by humans, it also has high electrical and thermal conductivity.

The hoof-shaped polypore Amadou is the best-known fire starter fungus. If thoroughly dried, woody fungi like Amadou, Camp Balls, Agarikon, Chaga, and False Tinder Conk can ignite and serve as a source of tinder. The Blackfoot people of North America traditionally travelled with burning pieces of the Red Belted Conk inside of a buffalo horn. The Atabascan, Cree, and various European and Eurasian people have traditionally used Amadou as a tinder source. In more recent centuries, its flammability was used to ignite the gunpowder in early flintlock rifles. Amadou is so combustible that one can simply send a flint spark into the conk's pores and gently blow to create an ember inside the conk.

Ötzi's story has been carried thousands of years into the future through fungus, fern, ice, arrows, and deer. This ancient messenger probes our future. The stories of our humanism have merged, what other kind of time-traveling or interdimensional communication is happening? How are you experiencing selfhood? What tinder ignites your journey and how do you carry it? The meaning that we track is alive ever-expanding in this ever-expanding universe. We are conversing with the cosmos in our own aliveness and trusting ourselves to be a part of this unfolding story. In the words of Stargazer Li, "ride the arrow's song"!

2) Matsutake (Tricholoma matsutake and T. magnivelare): Nurture, grace, shapeshifting, relatedness, immune system, nervous system, sacredness

Tricholoma magnivelare on altar. (2018)
Matsutake came to me out of the luck of the moon. Matsutake sing the grace of shapeshifting, the relatedness of bounty, and the nourishing of the sacredness. En route to a mineral show, I happened to find a Suillus luteus, which also ignited the hearts of many mineral folk! The Suillus enjoyed being in the presence of the minerals; other sensual forms of the earth. We were following a mycophilic trail connecting mineral and mushroom, hearing stories and recipes from people from all parts. I was eventually pointed toward a booth with a dozen T. magnivelare that were being lovingly brushed and cleaned, brought from the coast that morning.

The Tricholoma Matsutake is a spicy delicacy with a long history, a ceremonial mushroom in places like Japan, Korea, and China, and often gifted in wooden boxes to celebrate autumn. The poetry-inspiring T. matsutake has been harvested in Japan for at least 1,200 years, and was once only allowed for members of the emperor's court. Nowadays, there is far greater demand for Matsutake than the total imported and domestic harvest can supply and T. magnivelare species that grow in the U.S. and Scandinavia are imported in high volume. Domestic pine forest harvesting is diminishing since the area of "shiro" (underground mycelia colony of T. Matsutake) is decreasing. The overwhelming desire for Matsutake brings in the importance of shedding light on unsustainable harvest techniques.

Just as the storyteller shows us the versatility of our very own shapeshifting, Matsutake's mycorrhizae can form symbiotic, or mutually beneficial, relationships with the roots of many trees species. As with other fungi, Matsutake carry the same genes in different places around the world, so there are some varieties in genotypes that vary according to the species of host. The Tricholoma genus derives from the Greek "trichos" meaning hair and "loma" meaning fringe or border. This genus contains a large number of fleshy white-spored gilled mushrooms which can be found worldwide existing in ectomycorrhizal (symbiotic) relationships with coniferous or broad-leaved trees. As with many mushroom names, there are many stories behind calling T. Matsutake a "Matsutake" (pine mushroom) as it is a long convoluted one containing suspicion, DNA-investigations, and international politics.

Just like the elusive and morphing Matsutake, we cannot be confined. In times when no mycorrhizal host species is available, T. matsutake have revealed chemistry of a sapotroph, existing as a decomposer of organic material instead. (Side question -- science, isn't death symbiotic?) Our journey is expanding, forming new symbiotic relationships with each moment, sharing, giving, and receiving each other as the Matsutake and Host Organism. With Mars in pisces squaring Sun and Moon, remember to take your sweet time with yourself and Mars' internalization. Nurturing not only your hosts, but also back into your own spirit and at times decompose what needs to be let go of.

Matsutake smell conjures sweaty socks, ripe funk, and sweet cinnamon. A powerful umami taste; the mushroom carries a slight nasal-spice sensation of ginger and commands its own embodiment with a stimulatory affect on our taste receptors. Tricholomic acid is a flavor enhancer that excites the central nervous system. With the expansive influence of Sagittarius and Jupiter, we have the opportunity to expand our awareness as Matsutake expands our nervous system. We can see and feel the greatest truth of all and to share our love and nourishment together during our journeys. Let the experience of life expand in all directions like the taste of Matsutake -- traveling up the throat and out of our head and down our spine, toward our heart, and through the sacrum. The Matsutake unite the energetic confluences of our body with a vertical zing of white light, permeating our form and expanding our universe.

During this on-the-move and stimulated energy enjoyed by Sagittarius and Gemini, there is also a danger to overwork and overplay. It is essential to set aside regular enjoyment of nurturing foods like Matsutake that take to our blood, strengthening our nervous system and connective tissues. Since Gemimi lives primarily in the mind and not through the emotions, Matsutake allows us to learn how to embody our form - in the present moment. Food is the simplest way to nurture our health and spirit. Caffeine and stimulants could excite any nervous energy, so remember to take time to unwind and soothe nerves with lots of water, Turkey Tail tea, baths, and daily rituals. Make sure to serve yourself a warm plate at the ever-expanding dinner table. Jupiter and Sagittarius want us to revel in the love and light of what we offer each other and like to have a downright good ol' good time.

3) Split Gill Polypore (Schizophyllum commune): oxygen, chronic fatigue, circadian rhythm, pineal gland, hostility, nervous system, creativity

Split Gill (Schizopyllum commune) Steve Edmonds Red Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, PA, 11/20/2018
The Split Gill is here to breathe between polarities: to channel our excitable, storytelling energy in the present and to restore our nervous system with grounded breathe, sleep, and downtime. The Split Gill is a tiny mushroom, appearing all across the planet. The brown-spored, mandala-like underside of this fungus reminds us of the many winds of Gemini; the multiplicity of forms (Split Gill also has 28,000 different ways in which it can engage in sex), the quick-to-rise-curiosity, and the polarity of light and dark. Split Gill's white hairy top is related to extreme sensitivity on the higher plane, while the wavy, frazzled underneath of the mushroom represents stress, irritation, and nervous excitability.

During full moons, the sun is opposite of the moon which highlights the opposing forces of our consciousness between the last Scorpio New Moon and the next Full Moon on December 7, 2018. We can struggle through fighting our emotions and thoughts or observe that which goes through us. We may instead direct fighting or combative energy toward grounding breath, song, dance, writing letters, or other healing, connective, and creative modalities. How do you channel an abundance of storytelling energy? Take the opportunity to be filled with the fullness of expression and thoughtful exploration.

There is a lot of potential for expansion as Moon 5 represents the fusion of polarity. Feminine being even (2) in frequency and masculine being odd (3) in frequency = 5. Flow with the last warm gemini breezes of autumn and let your flames spread in an effortlessness ability to meet the moment.

Gemini governs the delicate link between mind and different parts of the body and the state of mind has a great deal to do with the state of Gemini's health. Sagittarius is Gemini's polarity, emphasizing energies of completeness during this moon. Gemini is the sign of thought and communication on a personal level, striving for self-expression, and may impose points of view on others, while Sagittarius is the sign of governing the wider realm of philosophy and mental exploration, tending to shrink in personal involvement. Excitable Gemini rules the nerves, try to see past the high-strung tendency of Gemini and allow Jupiter's expansiveness to nurture. Mercury rules Gemini, associated with respiration, brain, and entire nervous system. In times of stress, may have difficulty breathing and suffer from hyperventilation or an inability to draw in enough oxygen downward to ground us to the earth.

Split Gill mushroom essence is related to the restoration of our circadian rhythm. It combines well with Chaga mushroom essence for health of the pineal gland and production of melatonin. Split Gill extracts have also been researched in Japan for the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome. Sleep is the time when our immune system becomes restored and initiates repairs: the liver cleanses efficiently and the entire system relaxes and regenerates. Chronic inflammation subsides, and the dream state brings awareness to a plethora of subconscious messages. Each moment along your journey can be used to restore and refresh.

Journey in present and let yourself surrender to Sagittarius' sharp, swift, and cunning arrow to seek out your meaning by meeting the moment, conversing, singing and dancing with the universe and our unfolding together.
